Faces are tricky, and difficult, and frustrating, and... argh. I feel your pain. Still having worked with pencil and paper and using no reference, this came out really well. Something I found to be really helpful, aside from using direct reference photos, was a book by Christopher Hart titled "Human Anatomy Made Amazingly Easy". It had a nice chapter dedicated to the hills and valleys of the face as well as eye, lip, and nose construction.
